I’m Dr. Kristi Tompkins and I’m a licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor practicing Functional Medicine. While Functional Medicine is a more modern term, Naturopathic Medicine has been around for many decades. Essentially they share a very similar comprehensive, root cause approach to healing the human body. Please read the Functional Medicine and Your Health page for more information.
With over 10 years of experience as a doctor and over 25 years as a Nutritionist, I chose this healing profession (and followed this calling) because it perfectly resonates with how I view health: whole body approach, preventative, natural or the least harmful to obtain the best results. More significantly, it is my passion to share with others what I have observed repeatedly with patients as well as what I’ve experienced in my personal life so that I can be source of inspiration and motivation with others.
When evaluating and understanding patients, I ask specific and detailed questions to unearth the root cause(s) of why they have symptoms or have been diagnosed with a medical condition. In many cases, it has yet to be uncovered or diagnosed. I am fascinated with the intelligence, the mystery and the self healing mechanism of the human body and I enjoy educating others on how to help themselves recover. Whether it’s our communication between hormones, our dynamic gut microbiome, our powerful muscles, our intelligent brain or our relentless heart, it is the synergy of our body and mind that continues to amaze me.
Throughout various times in my life, I have struggled with my health and have had many of those challenges treated with functional medicine. From menstrual irregularities, PMS, cystic acne, migraine headaches, IBS and food sensitivities, sugar and bread addiction, chronic sinusitis, severe insomnia and a period of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with subsequent depression and anxiety. With the additional help from a variety of professional colleagues (Naturopathic Doctors, Conventional MD’s, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors), my body has recovered. I wholeheartedly believe in an integrative, collaborative approach to healing.
I received a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest. I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Food Science from California State University, Chico. A healthy, nutritious diet is the foundation to vibrant health and longevity. Nutrition continues to be a passion that I instill with patients and practice in my own life as well.
Previous to starting my own business/practice in California, I worked in a well-established and successful integrative medical clinic in Seattle, Washington for several years. In this collaborative clinic, lab and dispensary of experienced doctors and practitioners, I had the fortuitous opportunity to learn and apply specialized bio-identical hormone testing, individualized hormone prescriptions along with a myriad of evidence based functional medicine treatments with patients.
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, in my personal time, I love being physically active for the strengthening, stress relieving and balancing effects it has on my body, mind and spirit. From group fitness classes to yoga, swimming, hiking, biking, paddle boarding, snow and water skiing, being out in nature is my meditation. Developing a love for cooking since I was 9 years old, the kitchen is my natural comfort zone. Once an avid baker many years ago (and still love to bake and share with others!), my meals tend to be more healthy Paleo Diet filled with an abundance of vegetables and fruits, healthy fats and some protein. I am addicted to podcasts, music, dinner parties and savoring local restaurants that celebrate Farm to Fork here in beautiful Northern California.
